Oil painting. Lesson 3
Shepherdess. The Seven-layer technique of oil painting.
I talk about the painting - the copy of Little Bo Peep by Elsley.
For this work I used canvas 35x50cm. I go to that way, which Artpapa showed.
It's multilayer old-flemish technique.
The 7 layers are as follows:
- Imprimatura
- Umber underlayer 1
- Umber underlayer 2
- Dead layer
- Color layer 1
- Color layer 2
And it's the first layer above a contour on canvas, imprimature.
2. Umber underlayer 1.
4. After 14 days of drying: Umber underlayer 3. Burnt umber. I have spent 8 hours for the first part, and 4 hours for the second and 1 hour for third- only most dark places.
5. Dead layer for background i colored to green. The mix consists of ivory black, Burnt umber, Prussian blue, ochre yellow light, white.

6. And I began first color layer on background but simultaneously was making Additional Dead layer for face.
Color layer 1 for background. Paints: oxide chrome, light yellow ochre, turquoise, titanium white, cadmium yellow light.
For the person, hats and hair I used 13 paints: a burnt sienna, cadmium red light, cadmium purple, thioindigo red-brown , Neapolitan corporal, Neapolitan pink, Neapolitan orange, glauconite, cobalt light dark blue, ochre yellow dawning, umber burnt, cobalt violet, titanium white.
7. Color layer 2. On this layer I has kept away the left sheep that it was accurately visible that the hand before it.
In first color layer I painted shadows and spots under the lilac and in this layer I paint the blossom and petals, thick touch without smearing.
I have varnished the finished picture and have inserted into a double frame.
